levels down, which many experts believe can stop weight gain. By almost
eliminating carbohydrates and using fat as the
main energy source, the diet forces your body into a state of ketosis,
a natural fat-burning state. While this can be an effective way to drop
pounds, it is not healthy.
Health Risks of the Atkins Diet
When your body goes into ketosis, ketones form, and your kidneys have
to strain to flush your system of them. This can lead to kidney disease,
or even kidney failure. Also, Atkins features foods that are at the same
time high in saturated fats and low in essential nutrients. This combination
can lead directly to heart disease.
People who have been on the Atkins Diet
for prolonged periods of time have complained of constant fatigue, and
some have even suffered from frequent migraines. Others have noticed that
as soon as they stop the diet, they put on weight more rapidly than they
ever have in the past. There are several disadvantages of the Atkins Diet
and the one advantage, weight loss, can be achieved through healthier
means, such as good diet and exercise.
