Supporters of the zone diet include numerous celebrities as well as some health experts, who believe that the zone diets recommendations do not stray far from the United States Dietary Association’s (USDA) dietary guidelines. While the zone diet is very popular among Hollywood elite, it has mixed reviews from health organizations. The American Dietetic Association, ADA, refers to the zone as just another fad diet. Numerous health experts argue that there are much safer and better diets such as the “5 a Day” system, that encourages people to five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. The American Heart Association, AHA, is also not in favor of the zone diet. Classifying the zone as high in protein and not recommending it for weight loss. They assert that the diet has not proved effective for long term weight loss. The AHA has gone as far as to issue an official recommendation warning against diets like the zone system. Believing that it restricts the consumption of essential vitamins and minerals present in certain foods, therefore making the zone diet hazardous. The Heart Association also finds the zone diets theory on insulin flawed, because there is no scientific proof that the hormone insulin plays a major role in weight regulation.

With the zone diet, just like all dietary fads, there will be those who do and don’t support the program. There will also be success and failure stories. If you are set on trying this particular fad the best thing to do is to try the short term zone diet, one of the many versions out there, and see if it makes a difference. If it does not work, don’t sweat, there is surly to be another “next big thing” in weight loss just around the corner.
